How to upload DICOM files
Accepted formats, how large uploads behave, and what to do if one stalls.
A CBCT export is usually a folder of several hundred .dcm files. You can upload the folder as it is — drag the whole thing onto the upload area — or zip it first. Both work; the folder is simpler because there is nothing to unpack if something goes wrong.
Accepted file types
- DICOM: .dcm, .dicom
- Surface scans and models: .stl
- Archives: .zip
- Documents and images: .pdf, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tif, .tiff
How large uploads behave
Files are checked before a single byte leaves your machine — the first few bytes are read to confirm the file really is what its extension claims. Anything over 16 MB is then split into parts and uploaded in parallel, which is why a large CBCT finishes far faster than a single-stream upload would.
If your connection drops, the upload resumes from the last completed part rather than starting again. You can close the tab and come back; parts already uploaded are not re-sent.
Do not rename DICOM files before uploading. The filenames carry ordering information that some exporters rely on, and a renamed series can fail to reconstruct.
If an upload stalls
- Leave it for a minute — a stalled part retries on its own before it reports a failure.
- Check you are not on a VPN that blocks direct uploads to storage.
